Introduction & Characteristics of Tiger-Patterned Agarwood
Tiger-Patterned Agarwood is a rare and premium variety of agarwood, formed when Aquilaria sinensis trees of the Thymelaeaceae family secrete resin to repair injuries caused by lightning, pests, or fungi. Over years or even decades, high-density resin deposits accumulate in the tree core or under the bark, eventually creating the unique tiger-like patterns that define this agarwood. It is mainly produced in Beihai, Guangxi, China, with historical origins in Hainan and Hong Kong (now rare), and also grows in parts of Vietnam and Cambodia.
Distinguished by its naturally irregular oil veins, Tiger-Patterned Agarwood displays starburst or waterfall-like lines on cross-sections and golden thread-like veins parallel to the trunk on longitudinal cuts, presenting deep black or dark brown hues. At room temperature, it exudes subtle honeyed and fruity-floral scents; when heated or smelled directly, it releases a layered aroma with a strong minty top note, floral-fruity-milky middle notes, and faint herbal-woody base notes. Boasting a resin content of over 20% (and up to 30% for top-grade pieces) and a high proportion of water-sinking material, it is a top-tier agarwood with substantial market value, where some aged specimens can command prices exceeding USD2000 per gram.
